She was really struggling with maths but to all intense and purposes she was a bright, lively girl achieving secure average levels in reading and writing. In Maths though she was 2 years behind. We had tried all kinds of support and interventions. Her mum revealed that she had had an emergency operation at birth and Carla had a brain bleed on the left hand side of the brain. She knew of the INPP therapy that I was giving some children and asked me to test Carla. I was not sure but agreed.

The assessment revealed that she did have a cluster of primitive reflexes and under-developed postural reflexes. I felt though, that her problems were more likely to be due to physical damage rather than NMI, however I agreed to put her on a reflex inhibition and development programme at home. After 12 months, her NMI profile improved and she made 2 years progress in maths. She left school the following year classed as ‘more able’ both in English and Maths. She came to thank me for putting her on the programme. I asked how she thought it had made a difference and she replied, ‘I can hear my voice in my head’.

Typical of many children with NMI the door to learning becomes more firmly shut as she gets older. Give her the right therapy and that door is flung open!
